Brain Aneurysm Treatment in Turkey

A brain aneurysm (cerebral aneurysm) is a weakened, balloon-like bulge in the wall of a blood vessel in the brain. Most aneurysms are small, cause no symptoms, and are discovered incidentally during imaging for other conditions. However, if an aneurysm ruptures, it causes a subarachnoid haemorrhage (bleeding around the brain), a life-threatening emergency with a mortality rate of approximately 30–50%.

Treatment of brain aneurysms (whether unruptured (preventive) or ruptured (emergency)) requires neurosurgeons with specific cerebrovascular expertise. The two primary treatment approaches are microsurgical clipping (placing a tiny clip across the neck of the aneurysm to exclude it from circulation) and endovascular coiling (filling the aneurysm with platinum coils through a catheter inserted via the groin artery).

Frequently Asked Questions
About Brain Aneurysm Treatment in Turkey

How is a brain aneurysm diagnosed?

Most unruptured aneurysms are found incidentally on MRI or CT scans performed for other reasons. Once identified, CT angiography (CTA) or MR angiography (MRA) provides detailed images of the aneurysm's size, shape, and location. Catheter angiography (DSA) offers the most detailed assessment and is performed when treatment is being planned.

Should every brain aneurysm be treated?

No. Small, asymptomatic aneurysms in low-risk locations may be safely monitored with regular imaging. The decision to treat depends on rupture risk factors balanced against surgical risk. Prof. Akakın provides individualised risk assessment for each patient.

What is the recovery time after aneurysm clipping?

Hospital stay is typically 5–7 days. Most patients return to normal activities within 4–8 weeks. Follow-up imaging confirms the aneurysm remains excluded. Once successfully clipped, aneurysms rarely recur.

Can I have elective aneurysm treatment in Turkey?

Yes. Elective (planned, preventive) treatment of unruptured aneurysms is appropriate for medical tourism. Patients share their imaging for pre-assessment, receive a treatment recommendation, and schedule their procedure. Emergency ruptured aneurysm treatment is not a medical tourism scenario.

When Does a Brain Aneurysm Need Treatment?

Ruptured aneurysms require emergency treatment to prevent re-bleeding. This is a neurosurgical emergency, not a planned medical tourism procedure.

Unruptured aneurysms are evaluated individually. Factors that influence the treatment decision include aneurysm size (larger aneurysms carry higher rupture risk), location, shape (irregular shapes are more concerning), patient age and health, family history of aneurysm rupture, and presence of symptoms (headache, visual changes, cranial nerve compression).

Small (< 5mm), asymptomatic aneurysms in low-risk locations may be safely monitored with serial imaging. Larger, symptomatic, or high-risk aneurysms benefit from preventive treatment.

Treatment Options

Microsurgical clipping. Through a craniotomy, the surgeon places a permanent titanium clip across the base (neck) of the aneurysm, sealing it off from the brain's blood supply while preserving normal blood flow. Clipping provides a definitive, durable treatment, once clipped, the aneurysm is permanently excluded and rarely recurs.

Endovascular coiling. A catheter is guided from the femoral artery (in the groin) up to the brain aneurysm. Tiny platinum coils are deployed inside the aneurysm, inducing clotting and sealing it off. This is less invasive than clipping (no craniotomy) but may have higher recurrence rates for certain aneurysm types, requiring follow-up imaging.

Flow diversion. For complex aneurysms that are difficult to clip or coil, flow diverter stents can be placed across the parent artery to redirect blood flow away from the aneurysm, promoting gradual thrombosis and healing.

The choice between approaches depends on aneurysm anatomy, location, patient factors, and the treating surgeon's expertise. Prof. Akakın evaluates each case individually and recommends the approach with the best risk-benefit profile.

Your Surgeon: Prof. Dr. Akın Akakın

Prof. Dr. Akın Akakın has specific expertise in cerebrovascular neurosurgery. His doctoral thesis at Marmara University investigated angiogenesis in arteriovenous malformations following Gamma Knife and embolisation treatment, and his fellowship at the University of Florida under Prof. Albert L. Rhoton Jr. (the world's foremost authority on neurosurgical anatomy) provided deep training in the microsurgical anatomy of cerebral blood vessels, skull base approaches, and vascular pathology.
